DID YOU KNOW...
William Murdoch left his home town in southern Scotland, aged 23, and walked the 300 miles to Birmingham. Upon arrival he asked James Watt for a job, got one and went on to become a full partner with Matthew Boulton and Watt. He developed many innovations, but is well known for inventing gas lighting, eventually for interiors too.
The Hall of Memory in Centenary Square originally had an adjacent colonnade which is now in the St. Thomas Peace Garden.
