DID YOU KNOW...
The original Victoria statue by Thomas Brock was erected in 1901 as part of the opening of Victoria Square, and was made of marble. Queen Victoria died 12 days later. The statue was recast by William Bloye in bronze in 1951. The Town hall was built in 1834 by young architect Joseph Hansom and predates many of the great European concert venues. When installed the Town Hall's 6,000-pipe William Hill concert organ, was the largest and most technologically advanced in the world. Between 1784 and 1912 the city hosted the Birmingham Triennial music festival and the Town hall was built to cope with its popularity, greats like Felix Mendelssohn and Edward Elgar have performed there.
