DID YOU KNOW...
On the very top of the Library there is a gold cylinder which houses the William Shakespeare Memorial Room. It was originally designed by John Henry Chamberlain and was part of the 1882 Central Library. In 1974 it was dismantled and reconstructed in the 'new' Central Library built on the same site. The Shakespeare Memorial Room was then moved again in 2013 to it's latest home. The Central Library is soon to be demolished. Known locally as the 'Ziggurat' it also polarised opinion to the extent that an application was made for it to be preserved under a grade 2 listing, which was rejected.
Captions will be added shortly.
