CATHEDRAL SQUARE ('PIGEON PARK')

Cathedral Square is home to St. Philip's, built by
Thomas Archer, and is the UK's third smallest cathedral. The square is better known as 'Pigeon Park' locally and is a beautiful iron fenced enclosure including large grass areas, trees, city monuments and criss-crossing paths. People are constantly passing through and often stopping for lunch or lounging. At weekends it becomes the focus for the city's youth, a meeting place for the rainbow city.

DID YOU KNOW...
Charles Gore DD (1853 - 1932) was the first Bishop of Birmingham installed in 1905. The second parish church of Birmingham, St. Philip's became the city's cathedral after becoming a new see after Gore helped to divide the see of Worcester where he was previously bishop. He was the leader of the Christian Socialist movement, and licensed the first women 'lay readers' in 1917. He was an advocate of friendly co-operation between the various Christian denominations. His statue by Thomas Stirling Lee stands proud by the entrance to St. Philip's Cathedral.
